On May 11, 1996, Karen, then 26 years old, exchanged vows with her future husband, Kevin, at Rutgers University's chapel.
According to her Facebook post shared in December 2016, she and her husband both paid for their wedding themselves.
They used their friends’ talents to save a bundle on their big day. One of Karen’s friends designed and made her bridal dress as a wedding gift, and another of them made her flower arrangements.
The two met at Rutgers University. When the journalist first started college, Kevin served as her resident advisor, and his presence made her years in college feel safer and more comfortable.
She recalled in an interview that it was love at first sight. She turned a funny shade of purple every time she saw him in the dorm.
She continued,
“It's amazing we ever got together, because after a while I just avoided him for fear of turning purple again!! We finally started dating just before Kevin graduated later that year. When I look at our three beautiful children, I feel that they are tangible signs that Kevin and I were indeed meant to be together.”
On May 11, 2016, she posted photos of their wedding, noting that it was their 20th wedding anniversary, talking about her relationship with her husband thus far, and how significant he is in her life.
She added that she had become a better person as a result of her husband, who had supported her through good times and bad, helping her recognize her positive traits when she was younger.
Karen is grateful to have Kevin by her side as her husband and the father of their children after 29 years of marriage.
