Who Is Mitch McConnell's Wife?
Mitch McConnell is married to Elaine Chao, a highly accomplished political figure in her own right.
The couple has been married since February 6, 1993, and their partnership has been described as one of Washington's most formidable political alliances.
Their private ceremony was held at the Capitol chapel, with then-Secretary of Transportation Dick Cheney serving as McConnell's best man.
Elaine Chao's Background and Career
Born on March 26, 1953, in Taipei, Taiwan, Chao immigrated to the United States with her family at age eight.
She rose to become a trailblazer in American politics, making history as the first Asian-American woman to serve in a U.S. president's cabinet.
At just eight years old, Chao began her journey to America on an overnight train in Taiwan with her mother and two sisters in 1961. They then boarded a cargo ship to cross the Pacific Ocean to California before finally reaching their destination: New York.
Her father had arrived three years earlier and worked three jobs a day on his way to building a shipping fortune.
Since she spoke no English, Chao would sit in her third-grade classroom copying words she didn't understand into her notebook. Her father would teach her those words when he got home from work late at night. After a year of his tutoring, Chao was able to speak English.
She resigned from her position as Transportation Secretary following the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, expressing deep concern over the events.

How Did Mitch McConnell and Elaine Chao Meet?
McConnell and Chao met in the early 1990s through a mutual connection. According to Chao, they were introduced "in the old-fashioned way" through family friends.
Stuart Bloch and his wife, Julia Chang Block, a future ambassador to Nepal, decided to fix up Mitch, so they invited him to a candlelight dinner with Elaine.
Reflecting on the early days of their relationship, Mr. Bloch told The New York Times that he wouldn't describe it as "sparks flying," noting that neither of them had that kind of personality.
Mitch and Elaine had their first date at the residence of Prince Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud, who was the Saudi Arabian
Elaine initially had reservations about being seen with McConnell, as she didn’t want to be seen with Mitch because she had her own career and didn’t want people to think that she was a groupie.
Mitch found her concern amusing because most of the women who went out with him were eager to be seen with him in public.
Mitch and his wife, Elaine, have an age difference of 11 years. Although Elaine was skeptical about dating Mitch in the beginning, the one thing that cemented the couple’s bond was their shared political ideology.
In an interview with TIME in 2014, Mitch talked about his marriage, saying that while some people viewed it as a mixed marriage, he disagreed.
He quipped that his first marriage to a liberal was the true mixed marriage and noted that he and Elaine shared similar values and understood one another.
In the same interview, he said that his wife, Elaine, is the biggest asset that he has by far.
Similarly, Elaine referred to her husband, Mitch, as her best friend, teammate, and the man who is at the center of her life at the McConnell Chao Archives at the University of Louisville in 2025.
She also mentioned him as the man who supported her career in public life.
Elaine called him her low-maintenance husband with CNN in 2017, saying that he is remarkably independent in their day-to-day life.
She revealed that he takes care of his own laundry and enjoys cooking. Elaine even joked that he occasionally takes care of her laundry as well.
Mitch found lasting love with Elaine, whom he considers the love of his life and is eternally grateful to have her by his side.
Before finding love in Elaine, he was married to Sherrill Redmon for around 12 years.

Do Mitch McConnell and Elaine Chao Have Kids?
Mitch and Elaine don’t have any children, but Elaine is the stepmother to Mitch’s 3 children from his first marriage.
Elaine has been remarkably open about a personal regret: never having children of her own.
Family-oriented Elaine reflected on this aspect of her life with CNN, saying having no children of her own is one of the few regrets that she has.
She explained that many women of her generation were led to believe they could successfully balance a demanding career with starting a family later in life.
However, she said reality often proves more complicated, as important life choices inevitably come with tradeoffs.
Drawing from her own experience, Chao encouraged younger women to recognize that every major decision involves sacrifices. She believes it is important to understand those compromises while making them, rather than realizing their consequences years later when there is no opportunity to change course.
When asked whether she had realized she was making that sacrifice at the time, Chao gave a simple but heartfelt answer: she had not.
