In high school, Johnson was a 6-foot-2 point guard, but he had a growth spurt and got taller. He got his diploma from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. In his senior year, he averaged 27.8 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. He ended his career with 1,175 points. In April 2014, he signed with Pittsburgh.
Johnson's shoulder injury occurred early in his first year at Pittsburgh, so he was given the rest of the year to heal. During his redshirt freshman year, he played as a substitute.
As a redshirt sophomore, he averaged 11.9 points per game and made 41.5% of his three-point shots. Johnson got his degree in communications in three years. He moved to North Carolina without having to wait a year because of the graduate transfer rule.
At first, the University of Pittsburgh didn't want him to play for their rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels, but in the end, they let him. Johnson decided to transfer because he didn't trust his coach and the team was losing.
In his redshirt junior year, Johnson had surgery to fix a torn meniscus. This kept him out of 10 games. Even though he was hurt, he was still third on his team in scoring, with an average of 12.4 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
He scored 32 points in a game against Clemson, which was his career-high. Johnson had hip surgery at the end of the season, but he came back to North Carolina for his senior year, which was statistically his best.
He led the Tar Heels in scoring with 16.9 points per game and made the first All-ACC team. Johnson had several great games. Against Wake Forest, he scored 27 points and made six three-pointers. Against Duke, he scored 26 points, and in a game against Clemson, he made six three-pointers and scored 19 points. Some analysts said that Johnson was "the best shooter in the draft."

The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Johnson 11th overall, but he was traded to the Phoenix Suns for Jarrett Culver. Johnson made his NBA debut on October 26, 2019, and started his first game on February 10, 2020, against the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Suns lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021 NBA Finals. Johnson scored a career-high 38 points and a buzzer-beating three-pointer to beat the New York Knicks in the 2022-23 season as the starting power forward, but he had surgery on November 8, 2022, to remove part of his right knee meniscus and will be out for one to two months.
On February 9, 2023, the Suns traded Kevin Durant and T.J. Warren to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Cameron Johnson and other players and draft picks.
