Paolo Banchero Family: His Parents & Siblings

A whole lot of athleticism was ingrained in Banchero since his birth, as both of his parents are athletes.

He was born to Mario Banchero, a football player, and Rhonda Smith-Banchero, a basketball player.

Paolo was inspired to play basketball by his mother, who used to play for the Washington Huskies Women’s basketball team.

She was the first Washington player to enter the WNBA by scoring 2,948 points and grabbing 803 rebounds en route. She later became a basketball coach at Holy Names Academy in Seattle.

Rhonda was the one who became an influence for Paolo’s successful career in basketball. The mother-son duo was once watching Roy Williams and Jim Boeheim at the heralded Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.

She then asked her son if he can see himself playing on this level or it is too overwhelming. Paolo turned to his mom and without any hesitation he replied, “I want to play on this level, mom.”

Rhonda became a catalyst in Paolo’s athletic career. She watched WNBA games together with him and also trained him to be the best version of himself as a player.

Paolo hasn’t seen his mom play basketball in person but he has seen the videotapes of her games. He has grew up hearing from people how good she was and he himself tells that she was really a beast.

Paolo even believes that some of his game mimics how his mom played.

Similarly, his dad used to play for the Husky football team as its tight end with Paolo’s uncle. His parents met while they attended the Pac-12 institution.

Talking about Paolo’s siblings, he has a younger brother named Lio and a younger sister named Mia.

Paolo Banchero Police Incident

A common search query surrounding Paolo Banchero involves the word "arrested." To set the record straight: Paolo Banchero has never been arrested. However, he was involved in a frightening police incident when he was 15 years old that shaped his perspective on race and justice in America.

On June 19, 2018, Banchero was a passenger in a Jeep driven by his friend, Noah Williams (now a Washington State guard). They were leaving a Chris Brown concert near Auburn, Washington. Unbeknownst to them, local police were searching for a different Jeep that had been reported stolen by another concertgoer.

A King County sheriff's deputy, Corey Marcotte, approached the driver's side window, pointed a gun at 17-year-old Noah Williams's head, and yelled, "Don't you [expletive] move!" according to a federal lawsuit filed later.

A second officer approached Paolo on the passenger side, hit him in the chest, and demanded the car's registration.

Thanks to his mother's warnings, Banchero stayed calm. He immediately told the officer, "I am 15 years old." His mother, Rhonda, had drilled into him exactly what to do if ever confronted by police: state your age, keep your hands visible, and do not make sudden moves. The officer de-escalated after hearing Banchero was a minor.

Moments later, Williams's sister arrived and confirmed the car belonged to their family. The police realized they had stopped the wrong vehicle.

Banchero and Williams sued the King County Sheriff's Office. Initially, they struggled to find a lawyer because, as Rhonda later explained, "a lot of attorneys won't take the case because your kid didn't die, and they didn't get hurt."

Eventually, the firm MacDonald Hoague & Bayless took the case. On September 6, 2019, a settlement was reached where the King County Sheriff’s Office was ordered to apologize and pay $80,000 total.

Paolo received $20,000 while Williams and their lawyer received $30,000 each.

Is Paolo Banchero Dating?

Paolo Banchero doesn’t seem to be dating right now. The basketball player hasn’t given any hints on his relationship status and neither has provided any glimpses of his potential girlfriend on social media (only if he has now).

However, Paolo once opened up about his relationship status with the Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes when he asked if he has a girlfriend or not.

He recalled the conversation saying,

“We just talked about everyday stuff, and then he asked me if I had a girlfriend. I told him yes, and then he said is she cute. Haha! Of course, I said yes”

Back in high school, Paolo Banchero did have a girlfriend. But these days? He keeps his love life completely under wraps.

That hasn't stopped the rumor mill, though. An Instagram page called Durant, known for sharing NBA news, rumors, and Kevin Durant content, recently stirred things up by suggesting that Paolo is dating pop star Olivia Rodrigo.

The post shared in January 2026 claimed the two were spotted together more than once. But the comments told a different story. Almost no one bought it. The most liked comment? "Does Olivia know this?"

There is no confirmed evidence that Paolo Banchero and Olivia Rodrigo have ever dated.

The rumor appears to originate entirely from the Durant Instagram page and similar social media gossip accounts. Neither Banchero nor Rodrigo has commented on the speculation.
