On June 19, 2018, Banchero was a passenger in a Jeep driven by his friend, Noah Williams (now a Washington State guard). They were leaving a Chris Brown concert near Auburn, Washington. Unbeknownst to them, local police were searching for a different Jeep that had been reported stolen by another concertgoer.
A King County sheriff's deputy, Corey Marcotte, approached the driver's side window, pointed a gun at 17-year-old Noah Williams's head, and yelled, "Don't you [expletive] move!" according to a federal lawsuit filed later.
A second officer approached Paolo on the passenger side, hit him in the chest, and demanded the car's registration.
Thanks to his mother's warnings, Banchero stayed calm. He immediately told the officer, "I am 15 years old." His mother, Rhonda, had drilled into him exactly what to do if ever confronted by police: state your age, keep your hands visible, and do not make sudden moves.
