In Wellington, New Zealand, Urban was born on June 7, 1972, to a German immigrant father who ran a leather goods shop and a movie industry employee mother.
His mother fostered his enthusiasm for movies, and at the age of eight, he had his first public appearance with just one line in a New Zealand TV show.
He continued to perform in school plays, but he didn't start acting professionally again until he graduated from high school.
