Frank Reich is an American football coach who currently serves as the head coach of the side Carolina Panthers in the National Football League (NFL). Reich played as a quarterback in the NFL for nearly 13 seasons backing up his teammate, Jim Kelly, in the Buffalo Bills.

Reich became known among people after he led his side, Buffalo Bills, to the greatest comeback in NFL history during the 1992 playoffs. Reich began coaching, eight years after he retired as a player in 2006.

Reich has coached several teams in various positions including offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers, as an intern for Indianapolis Colts, and later as head coach for the same team and more.

Frank Michael Reich Jr. was born on December 4, 1961 (age 61), in Freeport, New York, U.S.A. Frank is of German descent.

Frank’s father, Frank Reich Sr., was also a professional football player and played as a center and linebacker for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Though Reich Sr. was drafted by Philadelphia Eagles in the 1956 NFL draft, he didn’t play in NFL. Reich Sr. was also a technology teacher and coached at Lebanon High School.

Frank’s mother’s name is Pat Reich and his brother’s name is Joe Reich. Joe was also a football player and currently serves as a coach. It’s clear that Frank belongs to a sporty family.

Where Did Frank Reich Go to College?

Reich played college football for Maryland Terrapin as he was given an athletic scholarship by the University of Maryland. Later, he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 3rd round of the 1985 NFL Draft.

Frank studied at Cedar Crest High School in Lebanon, Pennsylvania as his parents moved there, soon after his birth. Reich was interested in sports since high school, he used to play baseball, football, and basketball. Later in 1980, Reich played as a quarterback in the Big 33 Football Classic.

Journey From A Backup Player To Professional Head Coach

The Buffalo Bills drafted Reich in the third round of the 1985 NFL draft. The Bills had already drafted star player, Jim Kelly, for the quarterback position in the same draft. So Frank was a backup for Kelly.

Though Frank was a backup and only got a chance to play when Jim was injured or couldn’t play, in the games Frank played, he always delivered his best and impressed his coach. Frank was also involved in the Bills’ greatest comeback during the 1992-1993 playoffs.

Later, Frank signed for Carolina Panthers in 1993, New York Jets in 1996, and Detroit Lions in 1997 before finally retiring as a player in 1998.

Frank started coaching in 2008, he served as an offensive coaching staff assistant for Indianapolis Colts. Later on February 11, 2018, Frank returned to Indianapolis as their head coach.

Between 2008 and 2018, Frank coached Arizona Cardinals as wide receivers coach, San Diego Chargers as offensive coordinator, and Philadelphia Eagles as offensive coordinator, when they won their first Super Bowl title.

Recently, on January 26, 2023, the Carolina Panthers signed Reich as their next head coach.
